Sandman and the Restoration of the Dreaming - From Zone 2 to the N1 Threshold

When I awaken from a long inner silence, I feel I must rebuild something I have lost.
My dreams appear fragmented, my images scattered, my imagination weakened. In that moment, I see myself as Morpheus in Sandman, returning to his devastated realm after a century of captivity.
The restoration of the Dreaming is not only a fantastic narrative: it is also the intimate work each consciousness must undertake when reclaiming itself after being hijacked.

The Original Paradigm: Rebuilding Belonging

In Amerindian paradigms, restoring dreams never meant rebuilding palaces of stone, but rather rekindling belonging.
When a community lost its rituals through war or invasion, it was through collective dreaming that life was rebuilt. Dreaming was the invisible cement capable of reuniting memories, affections, and dispersed bodies.

Here, the avatar Olmeca reminds us: “It is not the palace of the Dreaming that must be restored, but the bond that allows us to dream together.”

The Old World’s Domestication

The Old World, as Graeber & Wengrow show in The Dawn of Everything, domesticated collective restoration.
Restoration stopped being a shared act and became instead the restoration of hierarchies: kings rebuilt palaces, empires raised symbols of power, priests erected temples. Dreaming, which should have been a space of plasticity, was transformed into repetition of dogma.

In Sandman, when Morpheus returns to the Dreaming, he must recover his tools and rebuild the realm through individual effort. The allegory illustrates the clash between original restoration (collective) and historical domestication (centralized).

Sleep Science and Evidence

The restoration of the Dreaming can be compared to the return of consciousness during the N1 threshold:

• EEG shows theta waves (4–7 Hz) mixed with alpha, marking the transition between wakefulness and dreaming.
  
  

• NIRS reveals fluctuations in prefrontal oxygenation, linked to the reorganization of fragmented memories and images.
  
  

• Studies of EEG microstates show that this threshold is highly plastic: small attentional shifts can reconfigure large-scale neural networks.
  
  

In the Damasian Mind, this process is the re-encounter of interoception (inner sensations) and proprioception (body posture), opening space for the formation of new tensional selves after fragmentation.

Zone 1, Zone 2, and Zone 3

• Zone 1: the space where we still carry daily tensions, preventing full restoration.
  
  

• Zone 2: when we begin to release those tensions, we open the field to reorganize memories and images — this is where true restoration of the Dreaming occurs.
  
  

• Zone 3: when external ideologies or pressures attempt to reconstruct dreams for us, turning restoration into dogma or repetition.
  
  

In Sandman, the restoration of the realm symbolizes this return: leaving Zone 3 (captivity) and reopening Zone 2 (creative plasticity).

Synthesis

The restoration of the Dreaming in Sandman is a metaphor for rebuilding consciousness after captivity.

• In original paradigms, to restore meant to belong again to the collective.
  
  

• In the Old World, restoration was hijacked by hierarchies and dogmas.
  
  

• In science, the N1 threshold shows how the brain reorganizes itself between fragmentation and plasticity.
  
  

• In our framework, restoration happens fully only in Zone 2, where fruition and metacognition open space for new worlds.

“The dream is not rebuilt with stones, but with the flow of belonging that unites the fragments of being.”
