Estados cerebrais são configurações distintas de atividade neuronal que correspondem a diferentes condições comportamentais e fisiológicas. Exemplos incluem várias fases do sono, alerta, respostas ao estresse e condições patofisiológicas como epilepsia. Cada estado é caracterizado por padrões específicos de atividade elétrica e liberação de neurotransmissores, que por sua vez influenciam como os genes dentro dos neurônios são expressos e regulados.

O controle traducional refere-se aos mecanismos pelos quais as células regulam a eficiência e a taxa com que o mRNA (RNA mensageiro) é traduzido em proteína.
