How can Consciousness in the First Person gives us a better position in the face of Artificial Intelligence, Tyranny of Merit, Affective Computing and Surveillance Capitalism?

While TMS research provides valuable insights into the relationship between brain activity and consciousness, it is just one of many approaches used to study consciousness. Other methods, such as EEG, fMRI, and behavioral studies, also contribute to our understanding of consciousness.

 

Moreover, the claim that TMS can change energy or matter within the brain is not accurate. TMS does not change the fundamental laws of physics or alter the basic properties of energy or matter in the brain. Instead, it induces transient changes in neural activity by generating magnetic fields that interact with neurons' electrical activity.

 

Cognition: Cognition refers to the mental processes and activities related to acquiring, processing, storing, and using information. It encompasses various aspects of thinking, such as perception, attention, memory, language, problem-solving, decision-making, and reasoning. Understanding cognition is crucial in fields like psychology, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence.

Tyranny of Merit: The term "Tyranny of Merit" was coined by political philosopher Michael J. Sandel. It refers to the negative consequences of a societal emphasis on meritocracy, where success and social status are determined by individual merit and skills. The idea is that meritocracy can exacerbate inequality, create winners and losers, and undervalue essential non-monetary contributions to society.

 

Evolutionary Synthesis: The Evolutionary Synthesis, also known as the Modern Synthesis, is a significant development in evolutionary biology that occurred in the early 20th century. It merged Darwinian natural selection with Mendelian genetics, providing a comprehensive framework for understanding how genetic variation and natural selection drive evolutionary processes.

 

Affective Computing: Affective computing is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on developing technology capable of recognizing, interpreting, and responding to human emotions. The goal is to create machines that can better understand and engage with humans on an emotional level, enhancing human-computer interaction and user experience.

 

Each of these concepts represents a fascinating area of study and research, contributing to our understanding of the mind, artificial intelligence, societal challenges, evolution, and human-computer interaction. They play crucial roles in shaping various aspects of our modern world and are continually evolving as new discoveries and advancements are made in their respective fields.
